1. ITIL® Is Not The Same As Project Management

While ITIL® addresses how IT organisations should operate, project management addresses how individual projects should be executed.

The project management practice aims to ensure that all projects in the organisation are successfully delivered. This is achieved by planning, delegating, monitoring, maintaining control of all aspects of a project, and ensuring motivation for the people involved.

The purpose of the programme and project management practice(s) is to ensure that all projects in the organisation are successfully delivered and contribute to the creation of value for stakeholders of the organisation and its programmes.

2. You Can Study ITIL® Anywhere

ITIL® training can be undertaken in the classroom, virtually, or via e-learning, meaning you can learn at your own pace.

3. ITIL® Improves Communication

12.You Can Achieve Qualifications In ITIL®

The ITIL® qualification structure is as follows:

ITIL® 4 Foundation

This level means you understand the terms and have a basic knowledge of the ITIL® model.

After the ITIL® 4 Foundation qualification has been achieved, there are two streams:

✔️ITIL® 4 Managing Professional
✔️ITIL® 4 Strategic Leader

Each has several specialist courses associated with them.

ITIL® 4 Specialist

This level means that you understand the model to a degree necessary to apply the specific and correct ITIL® practices where applicable.

ITIL® 4 Master

Whilst there is still some ambiguity about the structure of the Master qualification, it is thought it will/might take the following format.

You must be able to explain how and why your company has chosen to adopt, adapt and implement core ITIL® concepts within the workplace across the entire service lifecycle.

To be eligible, you must work in IT service management for at least five years in leadership, managerial, or higher/senior management advisory roles. It is to ensure that you have an extensive base of practical hands-on ITIL® experience to demonstrate active involvement in implementation of the practices and to provide sufficient evidence of your role in the assignments and/or proof to carry out the tasks.

So, you must be able to explain and justify how you selected and individually applied a range of knowledge, principles, methods, and techniques from ITIL® and supporting management techniques to achieve desired business outcomes in one or more practical assignments. This application can be based on projects conducted in the past that involved the application of earlier ITIL® guidance or can be used to formulate and implement a future service improvement program to improve organisational capability.

Also, you must provide a declaration that the information within the submissions is your own work.

However, it all starts with ITIL® Foundation. Here are some things that you might not have known about ITIL® Foundation:

It Is A Complete Qualification

The Foundation level is the first of the ITIL® certificates and is the prerequisite for all other qualifications. The others, as previously mentioned, are specialist and master, and they each reflect a level of competence as an IT professional. However, Foundation is a recognised qualification. Therefore, it’s not a prerequisite to go on and take any of the other levels if you don’t feel they are a good fit for your career needs. However, for some people, ITIL® Foundation is going to be the complete qualification that they need.

It Is A Prerequisite For Some Jobs

Entry-level IT jobs might require you to have a certified level of competence to demonstrate both your skills and preparedness for the IT environment. ITIL® Foundation is the perfect way to do that, and the qualification can enhance your CV in a crowded market. But, first, check the requirements of the kind of jobs you want to go for and find out what your target employers think are the essential skills.

ITIL® Can Be Tailored To Fit Your Organisational Requirements

The skills and knowledge you will learn on your ITIL® Foundation course are completely tailorable and scalable for your own organisation. Whether you work somewhere big or small, with hundreds of IT staff and offshored capability or a handful of people in the office just a few desks away from you, ITIL will work.

There Is No Membership…However…

Unlike other qualifications like PMP®, there is no associated professional membership body with ITIL® Foundation. Or with any of the ITIL® qualifications. That means you don’t have to pay membership fees, but you don’t benefit from the body of knowledge and sense of community that comes with being a member. However, having passed an ITIL® qualification you will gain 12 months membership to ‘MyITIL’ which gives you unique access to the 34 practice guides and lots of other information like ‘white papers’ etc. After the initial 12 months, it is just £50/year to extend your membership.

There are also alternative membership groups that focus on IT service management and plenty of industry press. See what your employer recommends as your professional membership association if you think it would be valuable to join a group.

You Can Study Online

You do not need to go to a classroom to take your ITIL® Foundation course. The topic lends itself exceptionally well to self-paced online learning.

It Is For Everyone In IT

The ITIL® Foundation course is part of a suite of ITIL® courses designed for people who work in service management. Still, it’s also useful for people who work in a wider, broader IT role, such as IT project managers. ITIL® Foundation is an excellent grounding in what good technical ITIL service management looks like.

Whatever your role in IT, a solid understanding of how technical services are provided to the rest of the business is a great way to advance your skills and ensure everyone is on the same page with priorities.

The Exam Is Only 60 Minutes

Many professional qualifications ask you to sit long, essay-based exams. Not so for ITIL® Foundation. For this exam, you have got 60 minutes to answer 40 questions, and they are all multiple choice! Unfortunately, you cannot take any manuals into the exam. But, the exam itself is very manageable if you have done the required study.

ITIL® Foundation Is Only The First Step

While ITIL® Foundation is a very worthwhile qualification, it will only really give you the basics. It will help you understand the terminology, concepts, and key elements of how an IT service organisation works. You will come away understanding the service lifecycle, the critical processes involved in running a service division and how it all fits together to help teams deliver great service.

However, alone, that is unlikely to be enough to apply the principles of IT service management. Suppose your role involves setting up IT service processes or defining new work practices, or even taking part in the more complicated processes. In that case, you are going to have to take your studies further. The Foundation level is the perfect grounding. It gives you a general overview and awareness, which is all they need to do their roles effectively for many people. Just be aware that you should continue your exploration of service management beyond that if you want to lead and implement the processes effectively.
